Unless you have been living under a rock in which case you haven’t seen your Google Rank in the Search Engine Results Page (SERPs) plummet because of the new algorithm then you don’t need to read anymore. Google has left some Internet Marketers feeling very very ill. All of the buzz is of course related to lost revenues from affiliate sites or screaming clients wanting to know what happened and “why didn’t you anticipate this move by Google ?”. Your Google SERP Rank Got Whacked

If you go into the archives you will find my 11/15/2010 post on Homes For Sale Jackson Hole where we ranked #4 in Google SERP Rank and a second tier Hubpages site was on the second page. Well today, the main site is #99 and the Hubpages site is nowhere to be found. Thankfully, not all of my sites have experienced this Google SERP Rank BEAT DOWN !!!

Whenever I participate in forums and blogs I always leave thinking that most of the people commenting on this subject is crazy. I just think that the subject of Google SERP Ranking it is like the blind leading the blind. I guess it is only fair to discuss what the “state” of knowledge” is regarding Google SERP Rank.

There are 3 main studies that focus specifically on Google SERP Rank. The first study was from 2004 by Cornell University that used “eye tracking” specifically regarding searches on Google. The study was criticized by “Predictive Marketing” in that the data was derived “…from eye tracking study, not actual searches, and would thus compel some caution on extrapolating the results.” however, “seosearcher.com” stated that the students were to “…search in Google for 397 queries on topics covering movies, travel, music, politics, local and trivia.” which is counter to Predictive Marketing’s statement. In my opinion the heat map just illustrates what we all have known  intuitively which is the higher you are on the Google SERP rank’s first page the more attention you will get as far as clicks are concerned. As you can see the first 3 slots capture over 78% of the Google Page Rank…in other words 78% of the clicks. This is huge for business…big and small.

I also believe it has more veracity than what is given out there on the critic’s blogs.

The next Google Page Rank study was actually a mistake by AOL…who release the results of the study inadvertently in 2006. The study consisted of over 30 million searches of 600,000 AOL users. Richard Hearne presented a great analysis of the AOL data.

Richard Hearne’s review of the AOL data shows a different result for google SERP rank than the Cornell study that is a 17% differential on google page rank !!!

Ok the third study on google page rank is based upon the search results of searches of 63 gambling sites for 29,327 key phrases from 5,357,519 clicks by BrandSoftech.

So what do we know about all of these studies? Google page rank of the BrandSoftech? The results are 8% off of the Cornell study and 9% off of the AOL study. What does it all mean?

Google page rank is a crap shoot. Many say that when using Google External Keyword Tool to understand the search statistics that you should reduce the totals by 20% for ad words clicks and muddied searches. I on the other had strive to be conservative and look critically at the results and reduce all numbers by 40% before making any decisions.

Google SERP rank is extremely important to business viability on the web but caution must be observed when expending dollars and energy to increase google page rank.

Homes For Sale Jackson Hole is an experiment that I started last year to see how fast I can rank on Google

granted I have not really pushed homes for sale jackson hole very aggressively but rather wanted to do it sporatically

Well after months of doing nothing for Homes For Sale Jackson Hole, in fact I actually forgot about it, I went back and check its page rank in Google. I knew that I had made to #9 but was astonished that I actually made it #4. That is against the other sites on the first page that have hundreds of backlinks. At the most I have 4 backlinks to the site which of course flies in the face of all of those Gurus out there.

I have posted the results from Google, Yahoo and Bing both regular SERP and the video pages at Homes For Sale Jackson Hole .

Stealth Advance on Page Rank

I know it has been a while since i posted anything on this “experiment” but if you remember my last post where I highlighted the mistakes that I made in trying to quickly take over the first page of Google in this market.  See July Post So… given all of the backlinks that these site have, I just slowed way down.  Well today I just checked and low and behold, homes for sale jackson hole is on the first page of Google in the number 9 slot.  My explanation for this is aging within the Google network.  I know I made a big deal out of and took the stance that Google’s sandbox doesn’t exist and I know that in some cases it doesn’t but my opinion on this now is “the jury is still out”. For those of you who follow this blog, you will remember that in less than 10 days ago I announced that baby boomers lifestyle went live. The Sandbox (a.k.a. Sandboxing or the sandbox effect or the Google penalty) is a name given to an observation about the way Google ranks web pages in its index. It is the subject of much debate—its existence has been written about^[1][2] but not confirmed and several observers state that they have observed the contrary.^[3]

According to the sandbox effect, Google temporarily reduces the page rank of new domains, placing them into what is referred to as its “sandbox”, in an effort to counter the ways that search engine optimizers attempt to manipulate Google’s page ranking by creating lots of inbound links to a new web site from other web sites that they own.

A “reverse sandbox” effect is also claimed to exist, whereby new pages with good content, but without inbound links, are temporarily increased in rank—much like the “New Releases” in a book store are displayed more prominently—to encourage organic building of the World Wide Web.^[3][4]

David George disputes the claim that Google applies sandboxing to all new web sites, saying that the claim “doesn’t seem to be borne out by experience”. He states that he created a new web site in October 2004 and had it ranked in the top 20 Google results for a target keyword within one month. He avers that “[n]o one knows for sure if the Google sandbox exists”, and comments that it “seems to fit the observations and experiments of many search engine optimizers”. He theorizes that the sandbox “has introduced some hysteresis into the system in order to restore a bit of sanity to Google’s results”.^[3]

In an interview with the Search Engine Roundtable website, Matt Cutts is reported to have said that there are some things in the algorithm that may be perceived as a sandbox that don’t apply to all industries.^[5] Jaimie Sirovich and Cristian Darie state that they believe that, while Google does not actually have an explicit “sandbox”, the effect itself (however caused) is real.^[4]

The more interesting point of view is that if someone who is not a real estate agent trying to sell homes in Jackson Hole can dominate the first page of Google’s video page.  Why is that important?  Well let me explain.  If I were looking for a home for sale in Jackson Hole I want to see the property or a video of the property.  Since setting up this site, my Google Analytics shows that I had folks from California, Arizona,Louisiana,Oregon,Illinois,Mississippi,Nebraska,Alaska and Australia visiting the site.  Why is that important?  There are folks that are interested in homes for sale in Jackson Hole.  Now how does someone in those locations going to get engaged in the real estate market in Jackson Hole through a static web site.  How do they chose an agent?  They don’t they chose a property and go with the agent.  So the bottom line is that these real estate agents have been so jaded by the fact that they represent luxury properties and they don’t have to do anything but put up a static site and people will chose.  They don’t realize that Internet marketing is a WAR.  You need to dominate to win. We will see if they get the point. You can see the proof here
